  • Jefferson was afraid of France closing the deal and preventing the from acquiring New Orleans 
  • Gentlemen, I present the New Orleans Purchase.
  • Bonjour messieurs!!

  • Thomas Jefferson sent James Monroe to France to discuss the New Orleans Purchase but the French surprised America by offering us the Louisiana territory. 
  • There was controversy over the purchase due to the power to purchases land buy the purchase was defined as a treaty which the president has the power to do.
  • Jefferson agreed and bought 828,00 square miles for about 15 million U.S. dollars or 3 cents an acre and 13 U.S. sates(central America) now sit on this land.
