Jefferson was afraid of France closing the deal and preventing the from acquiring New Orleans
Gentlemen, I present the New Orleans Purchase.
Thomas Jefferson sent James Monroe to France to discuss the New Orleans Purchase but the French surprised America by offering us the Louisiana territory.
There was controversy over the purchase due to the power to purchases land buy the purchase was defined as a treaty which the president has the power to do.
Jefferson agreed and bought 828,00 square miles for about 15 million U.S. dollars or 3 cents an acre and 13 U.S. sates(central America) now sit on this land.
