Storyboard Text

  • The first communities in west africa were extended families. They consisted of 15 - 20 people. These communities produced most of the things they needed but traded with others for additional goods. Usually the head male elder leads the community and makes the decisions.
  • The extended families soon came together to for a village which had about 100 - 200 people in it. They would sometimes join together for additional help, like a flooding river or just for protection.
  • Some villages became towns by uniting together. The leading reasons for towns and cities were iron working and  trade. Some people set up the towns and cities near rivers for the trade routes and easy access to food. People learned crafts and got jobs in the town and cities
  • Some cities were able to conquer land and become an empire. This happened because the wealthy city rulers had so much money they could get armies. They also collected money from traders and collected tribute from the people he conquered. The more land they got, the more it formed into an empire
