  • Parents suing New Hyde Park School in the Supreme Court (School Pres. William Vitale)
  • Ban the school prayer!
  • NO!
  • The United States experienced another period of concern about the spread of communism and rebellion at home.
  • Engel wins the case 6-1
  • So, to promote Patriotism, students were given the choice to participate in a nondenominational prayer written by the New York State Board of Regents.
  • 1 of the First
  • But, the parents of ten students in the New Hyde Park school objected to the prayer and filed a suit in New York State because it was a violation of the first amendment because Congress could not establish a religion or stop free practice of one . The main parent was Steven Engel.
  • Earl Warren, the chief justice of the Supreme Court at the time, announced that the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Engel on June 25, 1962 with a vote of 6-1, quoting “the state of New York’s adoption of a practice wholly inconsistent with the Establishment Clause”
  • This case was one of the first in a series of cases where many religious activities violated the law.
  • One of the first cases to speak out against religious activities in America.
