how the immune system defeats parainfluenza

Storyboard Text

  • my pleasure!
  • Jimmy had just exchanged a handshake with the store cashier after his weekly shopping trip.
  • Thanks for shopping at VirusPlus!
  • The next day, sitting at home, Jimmy took his temperature, as he was sweating with chills and he was shivering. He had a fever of 103.
  • Little did Jimmy know, but he had the virus parainfluenza transmitted to him by the handshake with the cashier at the store the day before.
  • 110!!!!
  • Doctor Landis has just explained to Jimmy that his immune system has this virus under control and not to worry.
  • Hello Jimmy. Its doctor Landis. I just wanted to explain whats happening to you. Your B-cells are triggered when an antigen matching it docks to it. The B-cell eats it and digests it, then displays the shape to MHC molecules. With this combination, mature matching T-cells come and secrete cytokines to help the B-cell to multiply and mature into anti-body producing plasma cells. Once released in the blood, antibodies bind to the antigen (virus) and wipe it out.
  • Jimmy's immune system has defeated the virus, and now he has developed an immunity to whatever strain he had because so he won't get as sick the next time!
  • Wow! What a great day to be alive!
