  • “How I hated T. Ray, and the girls at school, but mostly myself for taking away my mother” (Kidd 71). 
  • Rosaleen
  • "This whole i was thinking you were actually supporting me when really you were just running away"
  • T. Ray  is an inconsiderate jerk, he made his daughter kneel on grits for an hour as a punishment.who. He didn't even care for the well being of his daughter.
  •  June Boatwright 
  •      “But she’s white, August” (Kidd 87).
  • “You know, Lily, people can start out one way, and end up completely different” (Kidd 248).
  • Lily is a fourteen year old girl who killed her own mother on accident 
  • August Boatwright
  • Rosaleen is a proud, middle-aged woman who works as a maid for T. Ray and Lily Owens in Sylvan, South Carolina. Shortly after Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act, Rosaleen goes into town to register to vote, setting in motion the events of the novel. Rosaleen is an extremely strong, confident woman, and her refusal to “back down” when confronted by racist whites causes her to go to jail

  • I haven’t put any paper in the stone wall for the last five days.
  •  Sister of August and May and part owner of the Boatwright farm. June finds it difficult to like Lily at first because she resents August’s involvement in the white world as a housekeeper for Lily’s mother.
  • The head of the Boatwright house in Tiburon, South Carolina, August Boatwright is a strong, charismatic, and enormously wise woman. August raises bees and runs her own business selling honey and beeswax products
  • Sister of August and June and a friend and roommate to Rosaleen. May once had a twin sister, April, who was depressed and committed suicide at a young age. Since that time, May has become extremely sensitive and prone to depression.
