After Moses led the Hebrews out of Egypt, they were led through the desert to the promised land by God. This took 40 years. During this time, the Hebrews grew restless and annoyed. They started to doubt God.
They stopped at Mount Sinai for a rest and Moses went to talk to God. The Hebrews, at this point, had lost all faith in God. The listened to Moses' brother Aaron and started to sin. They melted all their jewelry into the shape of a golden calf and began to worship it instead of God.
Moses, meanwhile, was on top of Mount Sinai. He climbed to the top, where he saw a burning bush. It was from God, and He spoke to Moses. God gave Moses a set of stone tablets with the rules for his people.
When he returned, Moses saw the Hebrews worshipping the golden calf. He was so angry he smashed the tablets! This meant that Moses had to travel back up Mount Sinai to get a new set of tablets from God.
