David Schonhaut, my great grandfather, was born in Skalat, Austria in 1904. 13 years later, after World War I, the town of Skalat would become a part of Poland.
It is a miracle that George and his two siblings made it to the Atlantic Ocean. They were extremely poor and most likely had to walk from Skalat to the coast.
Are we there yet?
David only had an elemetary school education because a better education wasn't available for poor people.
George, Tessie and David arrived on Ellis Island in 1921. David's travel document number was I.519436 Between David and his two siblings, they carried four pieces of luggage.
So, where do we go next?
One day, when David was returning to his home in Brooklyn from work, he ran into a women named Rose Oxenhorn, who came over from Poland with her two brothers Jack and Sam.
Nice to meet you. My name is Rose Oxenhorn. I was born in 1908 in Poland and I immigrated two years ago in 1921.
