Mare is being forced to relive her brothers death over and over again. Each time she watches him die she sees another way she could have saved him. "Shade's death is captured in perfect, painful, detail...Again it plays. Again my brother dies. Again. Again. Each time he forces me to see something else. A mistake. A misstep. A choice I could have made to save him:"(37).
Mare keeps trusting people, and they keep betraying her. " I thought I knew what heartbreak was. I thought that was what Maven did to e. When he left me kneeling" (505).
Although Mare has been broken multiple times she continues to fight towards her goal . "Try to forget Cal, forget Maven,focus on the road ahead. Where it leads I don't know"(507).
