  • Definition of Theme
  • •Age vs. youth is a theme that is very important in the play, Romeo and Juliet. •Age vs. youth is where characters will act older then they appear to be in number. •Another way to look at it can be someone being innocent and inexperienced vs. wise and knowledgeable.
  • Friar Lawrence is wise and thoughtful, Romeo is immature.
  • Romeo shows immaturity when he is banished for killing Tybalt, and says he would rather kill himself. friar Lawrence shows his age and wiseness when he thinks through the situation,
  • The Nurse thinks things out before doing or not doing something
  • another example for age vs. youth could be how the nurse acts as a wise mother figure to Juliet. she thinks things through before causing a scene, or before getting angry or upset.
  • Theme is defined as a main idea or underlying meaning of a literary work that may be stated directly or indirectly.
  • Juliet can act as if she's older, even though she's sometimes impulsive.
  • •It states "Thou cutt'st my head off with a golden ax/and smilest upon the stroke that murders me" (line 26 page 141)
  • blindness and sight can easily relate to the theme of age vs. youth.
  • "I think it best you married with the County. O, he's a lovely gentleman! Romeo's a dishclout to him..." (line 230, page 171)
  • the theme of fate and love can also relate to age vs. youth.
  • "Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow, By one that I'll procure to come to thee." (line 151, page 79)
  • Juliet portrays how she at times thinks and acts as if she is older then she is. Juliet is only 13 years old and goes off thinking she's in love with Romeo and gets married to him.
  • •Age vs. youth relates to blindness and sight such that the Montagues and Capulets are blind to how their kids are in love and continue to be in a selfish feud •Romeo and Juliet are blind to the rest of the worl and they only focus on each other
  • •Fate relates to age vs. youth because if it is their fate to die, or their fate to be in love, then y being impulsive, Romeo and Juliet can mess something up and make it worse then it should be. •love relates because Romeo and Juliet make decisions based off of their love for each other.
