Storyboard Text

  • A concerned doctor waits for Mrs. Carey to let go of her son's clubfoot. Philip's mother clings tightly to her only son as she knows her time left with him is coming to an end. Philip is unaware of the impending death of his only living parent.
  • After the death of his mother, Philip is sent to live with his aunt and stern uncle at a vicarage. They have good intentions but are uneducated in raising a child. The landscape is beautiful yet the atmosphere is gloomy, foreshadowing the events to come.
  • A cranky uncle yells at a young Philip for playing too loudly with his toys. Philip feels absolutely miserable and unhappy. Philip knows little more than the feelings of depression and loss.
  • Boys at school harass Philip for his clubfoot, strengthening the root of his insecurities. School only informs Philip of the activities he can not do, such as running and playing with the other kids.
  • Philip is a young adult studying abroad in Paris to become a painter, however a repulsive woman named Fanny Price with no talent causes him to reconsider his artistic pursuit when she hangs herself unexpectedly due to starvation and isolation.
  • Philip undergoes an extreme transformation both physically and mentally by having a surgery to correct his clubfoot. The procedure marks the beginning of a more positive and confident life for Philip.
