The black box represents fear and death. It holds the answer of who is going to get the black dot. Since no one knows who going to get the back dot it puts fear in them. This image also represents the people participating in the lottery.
Tone / Theme
The day they did the lottery was a beautiful sunny day. She tells this in the very beginning of the story to make it feel like a story that doesn’t end in tragedy. Pg 25 line 1-3:”clear and sunny, with fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming and the grass was richly green.”
Polysyndeton pg 27 line 77-79 : “Mr.Summers and Mr.Graves made up the slips of paper and puts them in a box, and it was then taken to the safe of Mr.Coal company and locked it up”
This image shows suspense because no one knows who going to get the black dot. It also shows tradition by having the lottery every year. Another tone is fear because everyone is hoping not to get the black dot.
