  • Situational
  • Dramatic
  • Verbal
  • “With these materials and with the aid of my trowel, I began vigorously to wall up the entrance of the niche.” This is an example of situational irony because you didn’t expect that Montresor would build a wall and trap Fortunato, you would expect to kill him then and there.
  • ¨The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge.¨ This is an example of dramatic irony because the reader knows that Montresor wants to get revenge on Fortunato and Fortunato doesn’t know that.
  • ¨"My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met. How remarkably well you are looking to-day! But I have received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts." This is an example of verbal irony because he is saying how well he looks and how happy he is to Fortunato meanwhile he actually wants to get revenge on him.
