  • 1st Punic War
  • 2nd Punic War
  • 3rd Punic War
  • The first Punic War started in 264 BC. This war lasted 23 years. The Romans lost many ships and men in storms during this war. But, they still defeated the Carthaginians.
  • The second Punic War began in 218 BC. Hannibal and his troops surprised the Roman army by marching from Spain through southern Gaul, and then crossing the Alps. They also brought elephants with them.
  • There was peace for about 50 years, then Carthage began to show signs of regaining power. The Romans attacked Corinth and burned it to the ground. After this, they became the leading power of the Mediterranean world.
