Storyboard Text

  • Supernatural Foes
  • Great Warrior and capable of deeds of great strength and courage
  • Noble Birth
  • Most epic heroes either receive aid from a god or goddess or battle some superhuman enemy. Beowulf fought two demons for the Danes
  • Travels over a Vast Setting
  • He has usually established himself in combat during a war and the hero has the potential for great deeds. He came to King Hrothgar and his people's rescue and fought in wars with his uncle.
  • National Heroism
  • Most epic heroes will have an above average station in life. Beowulf has the blood of the Geats running through his veins. His uncle is a king and both his mother and father are royalty
  • Humility
  • Distance makes the hero’s actions greater because they aren’t selfish. Beowulf traveled from Geatland to the land of the Danes, which is an overseas trip.
  • Before a hero can be celebrated by countries the world over, he must first be recognized in his home country as a great and heroic person. He was already known in his homeland for fighting great battles but after defeating Grendel and his mother his homeland crowned him king.
  • Even as the rest of the world recognizes the great deeds of the hero, he is never a braggart or even willing to take applause. He told King Hrothgar he came to help not for glory but as a friend and to help because he was in need.
