He has usually established himself in combat during a war and the hero has the potential for great deeds. He came to King Hrothgar and his people's rescue and fought in wars with his uncle.
Most epic heroes will have an above average station in life. Beowulf has the blood of the Geats running through his veins. His uncle is a king and both his mother and father are royalty
Distance makes the hero’s actions greater because they aren’t selfish. Beowulf traveled from Geatland to the land of the Danes, which is an overseas trip.
Before a hero can be celebrated by countries the world over, he must first be recognized in his home country as a great and heroic person. He was already known in his homeland for fighting great battles but after defeating Grendel and his mother his homeland crowned him king.
Even as the rest of the world recognizes the great deeds of the hero, he is never a braggart or even willing to take applause. He told King Hrothgar he came to help not for glory but as a friend and to help because he was in need.
