  • Conditions in France in the late 1780's
  • In France during the late 1780's, the social structure was made of 3 classes called estates. The 1st estate was made of the church, the 2nd of the rich and nobles, and the 3rd of everybody else. The 3rd estate, even though they were 97% of the population, only owned 5% of the land, and paid all of the taxes.
  • I'm a priest, so I'm in the 1st estate.
  • I'm a rich noble, so I'm in the 2nd estate.
  • I'm a poor farmer boy, so I'm in the 3rd estate.
  • The third estate and middle-class bourgeoisie met in a tennis court after being locked out of the meeting. They formed their own national assembly, and made a pledge not to leave until they had made a new constitution.
  • Tennis Court oath
  • Nobody leaves until we have a new constitution!
