  • Vitus Bering also had to familiarize maps and locations of territories, where coasts ended, and where to go north. He learned about European controlled cities, what not to do, and where not to go.
  • Vitus and his crew departed from St. Petersburg in Tobolsk, Siberia.
  • winter of 1725
  • From Yakutsk to Okhotsk they traveled with horses packed full with supplies halfway through the expedition, trekking through rivers.
  • 1727
  • In Okhotsk, they had another ship built where they traveled to the Kamchatka Peninsula and had a different ship, the St. Gabriel, built. They later sailed off and discovered St. Lawrence Island and passed by the Diomede Islands.
  • Hey look! there's an island!
  • "I must conclude that Asia and America are not connected," Bering stated.
  • Clueless of where they were, Bering and his crew sailed right through what was later named the Bering Strait but missed the sight of America because of the fog.

  • After the disappointment of the voyage, Bering and the crew returned to St. Petersburg
