Expedition would set out from a recent colony
Once in new region the spanish would meet peacfully with first group they enountered to discover which group in the area was most powerful
Spanish would meet with the leader of the powerful group to exchange gifts. Then the spanish would seize the leader and threaten to kill him unless his followers obeyed their orders
Spanish would fight on open ground because then they had the advantage
Leader of expedition would remain as governor of the new colony and the second-in-command would organize the next expedition
