Believing that this will be a way to end the misery and pain she must endure living with her mother, stepfather, and stepbrothers, Anastasia prepares to attend the ball, even allowing the rats to make the dress she plans to wear. “Our prayers have been answered, and we can finally walk among the elite and wealthy! Isn’t this just spectacular? Our lives will forever be changed,” she exclaimed joyfully, running up to her mother and stepfamily with the invitation in hand. “How very strange. The king has never invited the poor to his intimate gatherings before,” her mother said, her face filled with confusion. “Well he finally has a reason to! Now that the king is of age, the royals of the castle are giving every maiden in the land a chance to be chosen as his bride,” she replied, hoping they would believe the lies she was telling.
On the eve of the ball, Anastasia began to display symptoms of the Black Death, with large tumors on her body. Due to the fact that she was extremely ill, her family refused to allow her to join them at the ball. “You have fallen ill, and run the risk of getting the other townspeople sick by being in your presence. We forbid you to come with us this evening.” her stepfather screamed, with her mother beside him. “It isn’t fair. I do daily chores around the house without asking for anything in return until now. I beg of you to give me what I truly desire. My father would have wanted it this way,” she pleaded, hoping to get a reaction from her mother. To her dismay, her attempts to convince them were unsuccessful. As they exited the cottage, Anastasia realized how much she truly missed her father, and the life she once had with him in it.
Overcome with emotion, she returns to her father's grave, summoning Bubonic with the magical flute. Anastasia tells her fairy godmother of her desire to attend the ball, and the fairy godmother grants this wish. "I grant thee thy wish, one who's heart is pure, and intentions true," she said with the wave of her finger. As Anastasia heard this, however, she felt a pang of guilt for the horrible deed she had committed.
Nevertheless, Anastasia attends the ball, posing as Isabella. Upon her entry, the whole ballroom stops to admire her beauty. As the night progresses, Anastasia is successful in winning the heart of the Prince, and the two are close to sharing a kiss, until they are interrupted by the coughing and sneezing of the other guests at the ball. The King began to look around in confusion, unsure of why his guests had mysteriously fallen ill. "You! There, with the bumps all over your body! What have you done? You never should have come! Leave at once," The King said accusingly, pointing directly at Anastasia.
Realizing what a terrible mistake she had made, Anastasia returns home feeling guilty and ashamed of her selfish actions. "I was such a fool thinking I could ever be like them. What have I become? This isn't me," she thought, feeling more like an outcast than ever before. "Instead of trying to be someone I'm not, I should just be me. Even if that means not living with the prince in a castle, or not being able to afford these riches," she continued, ashamed of the stranger she had become.
Not much time passed before the Black Death spread throughout the whole town. The disease quickly transmitted from person to person, and the people's filthy way of living certainly doesn't help. "May the Lord come down upon us and save us from the end of the world," some would say. "Don't even bother. He isn't listening, or worse," others said in response. Due to Anastasia's reckless behavior, she had cost the town everything it was worth. But, alas, she was no where to be found.
