  • Caledonian Construction, a large Construction company based in Glasgow, is experiencing dwindling profits due to a plateau in employee productivity. Staff are experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety and are being overworked. Many are scared to speak out due to the high pressure environment. The company has hired Workplace Health Analytics (WHA) to improve communication and the general health and well-being of their staff. They are looking to create a happier and more productive work environment.
  • Management at Caledonian Construction hold a meeting to inform staff of the update to WHA. The Details of the WHA system are explained to employees and they are given the option to 'Opt In' or 'Opt out' of the data analysis programme.
  • All Employees who 'Opt In' are issued a Smartwatch by WHA, they must wear this watch during working hours. Desk sensors are also installed for relevant workers. Over the next three months WHA will collect data on each individual, creating a 'baseline standard' for every profile.
  • WHA now have a basis to analyse the employees behavioral patters and identify irregularities from their 'baseline standard'. An irregularity has been identified in an employees profile. Towards the end of each working week the profile spends an increased period of time at their desk and experiences a spike in heart rate. WHA will notify the HR department of Caledonian Construction of the irregularities in the profiles behavior.
  • When HR are informed, they carry out an informal meeting with the employee WHA notified them about - Steven. He informs HR he is feeling stressed and anxious due to unrealistic weekly deadlines he is given. A meeting is set up with Steven's line manager to discuss how he has been feeling for the last two months.

  • In this meeting, the line manager is made aware of the irregularities in Steven's heart rate over the last two months. Steven explains his work load has become unmanageable, leading him to feel stressed and anxious. They discuss the problem and create a plan to decrease his workload. A meeting is planned for a months time to check in with Steven.
