This quote represents how fear controlled the boys on the island. Fueled by their fear the boys viciously murder Simon and leave is dead body to be washed away at sea. immediately after the boys try to justify their murderous actions blaming the “beast”. Their fear of the “beast” consumed them causing them to act manically.
