  • In 1607 ships entered into Chesapeake Bay. They settled in Jamestown on a peninsula so they can defend themselves.
  • Land was swampy and not good for farming, settlers were expected to return profit so they searched for silver and gold. Only 38 settlers were alive when supply ships arrived in 1608.
  • I'm hungry.
  • the starving time winter of 1609-1610
  • Well you have to eat, rats, snails, snakes, dogs, or even your horse.
  • Settlers never discovered silver or gold but learned how to grow a less bitter tobacco from John Ralph who brought seeds from the West Indies, tobacco was sold in England in 1614
  • Representative government grew in the colony in 1619 when the Virginia Company allowed the ten towns in the colony to send two representatives, called burgesses to make local laws for the colony
