On Maple Street, we are introduced to the residents. Then, a flash of light shoots across the sky over Maple Street.
As all the electricity goes off, the residents try to find a solution by sending Steve and Charlie downtown and Tommy urges them not too. Tommy says that the light was an alien ship and that there was a monster upon them.
It's the kid!
It's Charlie. He killed Pete Van Horn
Les Goodman's car starts on its own and the crowd wants to question and blame Him. Steve stops everyone from becoming a mob.
Understand the procedure now? ...The world is full of Maple Streets.
After the crowd suspects Steve, a shadowy figure appears and Charlie shot him with Don's rifle. It ended up being Pete Van Horn and now Charlie is accused.
It's the monster! It's the monster!
A shotgun? Wil anybody think a thought around here! What good will a shotgun do?
You're going to talk us into a grave, Steve!
The lights switch from house to house and there is yelling from the crowd. People shouting all at the same time the names of who is to blame.
It's Steve and his radio!
Are you all gone crazy? Stop!
It's Les Goodman! His car started!
The end of the story, where the aliens, who were tampering with Maple Street, concludes that the residents on Maple Street destroyed themselves. It tells the meaning of the story, that prejudices are worse than weapons.
