Mandela continued his work for the ANC, he moved secretly from place to place.
He wore glasses and a dirty blue uniform with a driver's hat as he drove to meetings in the townships and in the villages.
Mandela stayed with Wolfie Kodesh, in his small flat in a white part of the city.
Every morning he woke up early and ran in the small the small sitting room for an hour, to keep himself healthy.
After a meeting of the ANC, Mandela believed that violence was necessary in order to change the government's ideas.
In order to make a change, Mandela was asked to organize a new group, that was separate from th ANC and was called "Umkhonto we Sizwe" wich stands for "The spear of the Nation"
Mandela asked Joe Slovo to join this new group, he was a member of the communist party, which had already decided that violence was necessary in order to change South Africa.
In January 1962, Mandela escaped from South Africa to Ethiopia, where he met Julius nyerere, the first president of Tanganyika, later he met Emperor haile Selassie, and for the firs time he saw African soldiers commanded by an African leader.
Everywhere mandela went in Africa, he found that it was his character that mattered, not the colour of his skin. For the first time he felt free from the injustice of apartheid.
