  • Due to a major famine in Europe Thousands of Immigrants, mainly from Ireland and Germany start to immigrate to America in 1854
  • Many of the Immigrants were Catholic. Most of the people in America were protestant. Protestants and Catholics did not get along with each other.
  • I'm a Catholic
  • I hate your religion. You Should have never came here!
  • Anti-Catholics started to riot, and protest against Catholics. The arrival of the Catholic immigrants led to several Nativist Groups, such as the Supreme Order of the Star Spangled Banner. (1849)
  • We need to stop the Catholics
  • Yes, I hate the Catholics!
  • The Nativist groups against Catholics pledged to never to vote for a Catholic and pushed for laws banning immigrants and Catholics from holding public office.
  • Never vote for them, and we must ban them
  • In July 1854, delegates from the groups formed the American party. Membership was secret and those who were questioned were obligated to answer "I know nothing". They became known as the Know-Nothings. (1850s)
  • I know nothing
  • Do you know anything about the American Party, or shall I call them the KNOW NOTHINGS!
  • Immigrants started to diverse the society, and transformed living styles. An important change was the American religious commitment. This led to a dramatic revival called the Second Great Awakening.
