Jamestown became a settlement because they wanted riches such as gold and silver. They wanted riches so they could send it back to England to get money from them. They also went there so they could also expand England's land so England could get bigger. They also wanted to make cash crops. (Which are crops used to make money.)
One thing that was challenging was the winter. The winter was harsh because they couldn't get much food and because the winter was cold. This is hard because the harsh winter killed many people. Also diseases caused deaths because they spreaded on the ships and the land. Some things caused diseases like if you eat something that you or your people don't what it is, then it cause give you diseases such as malnutrition and contamination, dysentery, typhoid, and scurvy. Finding food is hard because the land was hard to farm on, but, there was one man named John Smith. He was a bold and wise man, he got the richer people to work with the poorer people. One day, John was injured and had to return to England and now they were on their own. Only 20% of the people were left after many problems.
If I went back in time to this place, I would tell the rest of the people to go back to England and life will be easy. If the ships were broken, then I would tell them to ask the Indians for help and if they can't help we could make a small boat and send someone to England and ask them to send help. If that doesn't work, we could find new land and get better farming soil.
