Storyboard Text

  • Northern Free States: Why did they oppose it?
  • Well another slave state in the Union!  Now I'll never be able to get rid of slavery.
  • Not to mention it will spread West.  I hope we don't lose the balance in congress!
  • Northern Free States: Beliefs on Congressional Power?
  • I, Mr. Northerner, promise to follow the Constitution since it is the law of the land.
  • Northern Free States: Fears about the Compromise?
  • We need the advantage in Congress.  Southerners will get more Southwestern states as slave states and they will get the advantage, even though we have more land.  We need it to abolish slavery!
  • I could not agree more!
  • The Compromise would add another slave state to the Union.  It would also spread slavery to the Southwest.  Adding Missouri would make it harder for abolitionists to stop slavery.
  • Southern Slave States: Why did they support it?
  • Another slave state down for us!  Now we conquer Mexico and take their land.  Our country will be based on plantations and slaves!
  • They thought that the Constitution was the law of the land and whatever the federal government said should be done.
  • Southern Slave States: Beliefs about states' rights?
  • Here in the South, we don't care about the dumb Federal Constitution.  All we care about are our slaves and our state rights.
  • They feared that slavery would grow to the West and it would be harder to stop.  When they would get territories from Mexico,  the territories would become slave states since they are below the Compromise line.  Then it would be harder to get rid of slavery and get an advantage in Congress.
  • Southern Slave States:  Fears About the Compromise
  • Southerners supported it because they got another slave state.  They knew that they would get land from Mexico and that that land would be below the Compromise line, meaning that they would get more slave states and maybe an advantage in Congress.
  • An advantage in Congress is what I'm hoping for!
  • They believed that the Federal Government had no say whether or not they could have slaves.  Calhoun said it was up to the states .
  • Look at the fire licking that useless Constitution away.  State authority is what we want!
  • Since the Northerners got more land out of the Compromise, they could get a majority and abolish slavery meaning the Southern economy would go down.  The South would not be able to grow cotton cheaply anymore.
  • The Northerners did get a majority of land.  I hope they don't get a majority in Congress though.
  • Then they will abolish slavery and our economy will crash!  No more cheap cotton!
