The plot of the story is a young African american boy named Greg Ridley. Greg Ridley is failing math but he wants to play basketball. His dad won't let him play though because of that failing math grade. So everyday Greg came home from school his dad would lecture him on his math and tell him to hit the books. On one night it was a storm and he was caught out in it. So instead of going home and either hitting the books immediately or listening to his fathers lecture he decided to go to the old abandoned. He was alone at first or at least that's what he thought. Lemon Brown then came up behind him and startled him. At first Lemon thought Greg was there to steal his treasure and he threatened to cut Greg but Greg explained that he wasn't. Greg didn't believe Lemon had a treasure and not to long after the 3 thugs came to steal Lemon Brown's treasure. After this Greg believed in the treasure and Lemon showed Greg the treasure. To Greg's surprise it was just a harmonica and newspaper clippings that he gave to his dead son but got it back after he died. Greg didn't understand he expected gold, but Greg later realized that didn't matter after Lemon explained that the real treasure was his son's respect. Then it clicked in Greg's head not all treasure is gold. Lastly it stop raining and Greg walked home smiling about the lecture that he would receive when he got home
There were 2 main settings in the story. Greg and his dad’s house and the abandoned building where Greg met Lemon Brown. The apartment played such a big role in the story, it’s where Greg lived, slept, ate, bit the one that played the biggest role, the place where he got fused at. It was usually always night time. These to settings played a huge role in Greg meeting Lemon Brown. So on a rainy night Greg was about to go to his apartment but he didn’t want to hear his dad’s lecture. He couldn’t just stay outside though because it was rainy, so he decided to go to the abandoned building down the street and this i where he met Lemon Brown, learned about the treasure, and learned the lesson that not all treasures are of monitary value.
The characters in the story were Greg, Greg's Dad, Lemon Brown, and the three thugs. Greg was the protagonist and the young boy in the story. He wanted to play basketball but he didn't have the grades for his dad to allow him to play. This is why Greg's dad was considered the antagonist. This is also why Lemon Brown played such a huge role in the story. Lemon Brown's purpose was to show Greg the theme of the story. What Lemon Brown showed Greg made Greg change the way he looked at his father's lectures. The role of the three thugs was to prove to Greg that the treasure was real because at first Greg didn't think it was real. When Lemon Brown showed Greg the treasure and he explained that the treasure was something he gave his son before he died. This made Greg realize not all treasures are monetary.
