  • 1824- John Adams and the Corrupt Bargain
  • 1828- Tariff of Abomination
  • 1828- Jackson 1st election
  • John Adams had friends in high places and bought his way into the election.
  • 1828- South Carolina Nullification
  • A tariff put on hte South, but it was too severe and South Carolina threatened to secede
  • 1830- Worcester vs. Georgia
  • Jackson won the 1828 election by running for the common man.
  • 1836- Trail of Tears
  • Jackson believed that the government had the power over the states, but SC decided to nullify tariffs and Jackson sent the navy to block off SC. Eventually Henry Clay came up with a compromise and SC backed down
  • A missionary in Georgia was caught living with the Cherokees and he subsequently sued Georgia saying that Georgia did not have power over the Cherokees, and the church rules in favor of Worchester.
  • Jackson ignored the courts ruling and forced the natives out.
