  • Who is going to be next?
  • In 1789, thousands of women angry about the price of bread marched on the palace of Versailles. They were armed with many weapons, such as axes and pitchforks.
  • Execution of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette
  • Off with their heads!
  • This document was written by the National Assembly. It served as a preamble to the constitution and states that "men are born free and equal in rights."
  • Rise of Napoleon
  • I am the emperor now!
  • This time period started when radicals took control of the revolutionary government. It was led by Maximilian Robespierre, and over 40,000 people were killed by the guillotine at this time.
  • Fall of Napoleon
  • The French people were very angry at Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. They killed them by means of the guillotine on January 21, 1793.
  • Napoleon was a leader of a French army that won a lot of remarkable battles, and when the people lost faith in the government, Napoleon swept in and took control. This is called a coup d'etat, or a sudden seizure of power.
  • After spreading himself over too large of an area, Napoleon lost a series of battles, and was eventually exiled to an island. He made it back to France, raised an army, and then lost another battle. He was exiled to another island that was very far away, and then he died.
  • I am going to be stuck on this island for the rest of my life!
