The Pardoner tells the people a story, to encourage them to give money to him. The three characters are Tom, Dick and Harry. A waiter comes up to them and says Ambrodius,(the leader of the gang) was killed by death. The three men decided to go and confront “death.”
The three men find “Death,” and start to insult him. The men believe that he is a spy for Death. The old man sends them to an oak tree.
The three mischievous men, expecting “Death,” stood bewildered as piles of golden coins gleamed like diamonds in front of them. The men decided to have a celebration. The youngest of the three gets wine and food. Meanwhile the others selfishly plot a plan. If they kill Harry, they get more money!
Harry too devises the same plan. He travels to retrieve the wine, on his journey he buys some poison.
Harry gets brutally stabbed in the back.
Tom and Dick drink the poisoned wine without suspecting anything. All of a sudden they drop dead! The moral of the story is that ‘Money is the root of all evil.’
