The exposition starts off with Madame Loisel and her husband as the main character. This takes place in France during the 19th century. The couple live in a regular house, but have a maid do do the housework.
The conflict happens when Madame Loisel wants a better social life. To go along with that, she wants nicer things. She feels she doesn't have enough or nice enough items.
The rising action appears to be when Madame Loisel's husband comes home with an invitation to a party held on by important people. The husband talks about how hard getting the invitations were. Madame Loisel is excited, but feels she needs fancy clothes and jewlery for the party, which is why her husband purchased her a dress. She then just borrowed a nice necklace from her friend.
The climax is when Madame Loisel got home and found out she lost the necklace. Her husband goes out and retraces her steps trying to look for the necklace, but he couldn't find it.
The falling action happens when the couple decides to buy Madame Loisel's friend a new necklace, which happens to be there whole life savings. The husband used money from inheritance and work. The end up giving the necklace back to the friend and decide they have to work off the whole 36000 francs.
The story ends when the couple work for ten years trying to pay the necklace off and Madame Loisel decides to confess to her friend the truth about the necklace. When she went up to her friend, the friend didn't recognize her because she looked like a mess. Once Loisel told her who she was, she told her all about the necklace. In the end, the friend's necklace was fake and only as much as 500 francs.
