  • They lived in Ozark, Arkansas. Their families were British, French, German, Irish, and Native American.
  • They grew up in homes near the Arkansas River.
  • When they were very young, they worked in factories.  Most worked in cotton and furniture factories.
  • They learned to read and write at school.  Schools were segregated and they graduated after 8th grade.
  • They went to church.  There were different churches depending on religion, such as Catholic, Protestant, and a Jewish Synagogue church.
  •  Children worked all year round. But during the summer, during their free time, they liked to play baseball.
