  • I didn't raise my boy to be a soldier,I brought him up to be my pride and joy.Who dares to place a musket on his shoulder,To shoot some other mother's darling?
  • We cannot go to war with our own people!
  • Indeed, we must respect our German ancestry!
  • Not even food! Thousands of our German people are dying.
  • This is horrible! We cannot get weapons and military supplies through!
  • Divided Loyalists- There were many moral issues that people had toward the war. Many Americans did not want their sons to experience the war.
  • We will counterblockade by using U-boats! Any British or Allied ship found in the waters will be sunk!
  • Divided Loyalists- Millions of Americans had close ties to the nations that they immigrated from. For example, there were American citizens that had family in Germany and they did not want to go to war with them.

  • British strengthened their naval strength. So, they blockaded the German coast to prevent weapons and other military supplies from getting through. They then extended the blockade to neutral ports and mined the entire North Sea.

  • Germany responded to the British blockade with a counterblockade by U-boats, which are submarines.
  • This is the Zimmermann note, which was a telegram that the German minister sent to the German ambassador in Mexico asking for an alliance against the United States.
  • The Lusitania was a lucrative passenger ship. It was sunk because of U- boats by the Germans on May 7, 1915. 128 Americans died.
