As they come back from school, they would often find little treasures in the knot hole of the tree in front of the Radley's house, like chewing gums (I know they look huge).
The most expensive gift they got from the hole is a combo of a pocket watch, a medal for spelling and a well-made knife.
They even found little soap crafted statues of themselves, which made them think about the identity of the one who gave them all that.
They wanted to write a letter to the generous person who gave them all those treats. They inserted the note in the knot hole.
One day they discovered that the knot hole has been filled with cement by Nathan Radley, who claims that the healthy-looking tree is dying.
On the night of the fire, Scout was freezing, observing the situation in front of the Radley's place. She did not notice at all when Boo put a blanket on her shoulder.
