El Salvador is the smallest and most densely populated country in South America. It lies on the Pacific coast and is bordered, as the map shows, by Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. The capital of el salvador is San Salvador which 1.5 million people live there.
In 1821 El Salvador declared its independence from Spain. Indigenous Indian populations had always owned land communally, but in 1881 this right to share land was banned. Coffee was the biggest export and therefore the biggest source of income.
As the coffee plantations grew the owners of these plantations forced the poorer farmers off their land. These farmers were forced into slave labour which means working long, exhausting hours for very little pay.
