  • Divine Rights
  • I do not need you to help me rule, so I shall rule without you!
  • That's crazy! You cannot rule without us! You shall see that you need us!
  • Taxation Without Representation
  • I need money to pay off the debts from the War! I am going to add new taxes to the people of England!
  • You cannot do that! The people will not be grateful if you do!
  • Pure Madness
  • Will you change the way our church is governed?
  • No, I will not change the way the church is governed.
  • King James I did not think he needed the Parliament to rule England, so he did not consent the Parliament when ruling England.
  • King James I needed to pay off the debt from the long years of war against Spain. He was going to ask the Parliament for money. Instead, he made new taxes on the people of England. Instead of being able to pay off the debts, he doubled them!
  • The Puritans of the Parliament wanted to change the way that their church was governed. They asked King James I and he did not change anything. The Puritans were disappointed and that caused a later clash started by his son, Charles I.
