- I had no other choice but to let Richieu go with Persis. I was terrified of what would happen to him if he was with us or with Persis, but I couldn't take the risk. I would never forgive myself if something happened. I don't know what I would have done to myself if he died while he was still with us. I still regret not letting him go sooner when Vladek suggested it the first time.

- When Vladek left me in the barn in Sosnowiec I couldn't bear it. He would leave for hours looking for food while I was stuck waiting to hear he was shot or for him to come back.
