Texas v. Johnson
"America, the red, white, and blue, we spit on you, you stand for plunder, you will go under"
In Dallas, Texas, in 1984 there was a protest against the war and people were vandalizing businesses and shouting chants.
Texas tried and convicted Johnson for burning the flag because it was unlawful and upset many people.
The constitutional issue is that convicting him would go against the first amendment which is his freedom of speech.
The outcome of the case is 5-4 , the court ruled that Johnson's burning of the flag was protected by the first amendment.
We can now protest more freely and in different ways
