Hi I'm Tan Le and I am a Vietnamese immigrant. this is my story!
I was 4 years old when the Vietnam war occurred. It was too dangerous to live in Vietnam so me, my sister, my mum and my grandma escaped and migrated to Australia.
our boat was disguised as a fishing boat so that we would not get caught. It was a small boat in the China Sea that we spent 5 days and nights on.
After 3 months in immigration camp, we settled in Melbourne!
We were very poor and couldn't afford a lot of things. Me, my mum and my sister had to share a bed and me and my sister had to have a school dress down to our ankles so it could last all of primary school.
It wasn't easy moving to Australia, I didn't know the culture or how to use the cutlery. Strangers would draw graffiti on our house saying "Asians go home"
ASIANS GO HOME!
