Storyboard Text

  • Starting in 1958, Communist leader Mao Zedong introduced the Great Leap forward in Chinese society.
  • I am Mao Zedong and I want China to be one of the world's greatest powers!
  • Similar to Stalin's Five Year Plan, it was hoped to industrialize China in terms of agriculture and technology.
  • This is not my land anymore yet I must work for it.
  • All farmland was collectivized, meaning all private land was turned to the state. However, there was a greater emphasis on steel production in hopes of competing with the West.
  • We must focus on steel! Food and wood can wait.
  • However throughout 1959-1961 it was clear citizens were more focused on producing steel than food. There were simply too many mouths to feed for such lagged production.
  • We're starving!!
  • This resulted in a severe famine that was thought to have killed 30-40 million people (ChinesePosters 9).
