Storyboard Text

  • The Secret Life of Bees
  • Comic by Olivia Janicek
  • By Sue Monk Kidd
  • Set in Tiburon, South Carolina, Lily Owens is about to ask August, an African-American beekeeper about her mother who died at a young age.
  • August is in her bedroom, and Lily begins asking her about her mother, showing August a shoebox of her belongings.
  • Did you know my mother?
  • August reveals everything. Such as she knew Lily's mother because she was her caretaker when she was little and that T.Ray wasn't always mean.
  • Your mother looked just like you.
  • Then, August explains that she left Sylvan and T.Ray to seek refuge with August and her sisters. Yet she went back to get Lily, only to die in the process. T.Ray had always told Lily that she had been the killer, yet she thought he was teasing.
  • Did I shoot my mother?
  • Yes.
  • Lily can't believe it. She feels extremely guilty about the death, and angry about her mother abandoning her. Instead of telling her everything's okay, August offers wise words.
  • "She was all I wanted, and I took her away."
  • "There is no perfect, there is only life."
