  • Man vs. Society
  • What about my family? What would the town think?
  • Man vs. Self
  • Libby Wahlenmayer
  • Paslowski
  • After O'Brien receives his draft notice, he is left with a dilemma. Although society expects him to fulfill his duty, he doesn't want to fight in the war. However, the town's view of him, and his family, convinces him to join.
  • Man vs. Society
  • It was a lovely story but if you took out ... it would be better.
  • Before deciding, O'Brien escapes to the border when the pressure gets too high. Here, an elderly man shows him each side of the river while 'fishing', leading O'Brien into an internal conflict due to his cowardice in not being able to leave behind his family.
  • Man vs. Man

  • Man vs. Self
  • O'Brien shares about Rat Kiley killing a buffalo after Curt Lemon's death and mentions that a member of the audience usually tells him they didn't get it. Each soldier struggles to get the public to understand their stories, such as this one about love.
  • Then you didn't get it.
  • O'Brien goes through a man v. man conflict when he is on night watch and sees a man appear out of the mist. He instinctively launches a grenade, killing the man, before the man has even noticed the soldiers.
  • However, O'Brien has trouble coming to terms with his having killed another person, even though Kiowa tries to help him pull himself together. As O'Brien imagines a past for the dead Vietnamese man, he feels more guilt and horror.
