  • The Ultimate Boon:
  • All done. That wasn't so bad, was it?
  • Refusal of the Return:
  • I won't! I won't go home. You cant make me!
  • You may stay here tonight. I want to talk to you.
  • Magic Flight:
  • Even I voted for Gabriel's Release!
  • Release?
  • "He killed it! My father killed it!" Jonas said to himself, stunned by what he was realizing." (Lowry, Page 188) Jonas has just witnessed his father release one of the twins. He is left in shock and pure horror, realizing what release actually is. Jonas soon comes to the realization that he needs to find a way to change the community.
  • Rescue From Without:
  • I'm sorry Gabe. We need to sleep now...
  • "I won't! I won't go home! You can't make me!" Jonas sobbed and shouted and pounded with his fists." ( Lowry, Page 190 ) Jonas refuses to go back home to his family and to his seemingly innocent father, who has just murdered a baby.
  • The Crossing or Return Threshold:
  • I remember my parents and Lily! Asher and Fiona! The Giver! I remember MY memories!
  • "So," father went on, "we obviously had to make a decision. Even, I voted for Gabriel's release when we had the meeting this afternoon." Jonas put his fork down and stared at his father. "Release?" he asked. Father nodded. "We certainly gave it our best try, didn't we?" ( Lowry, Page 206 ) Jonas has now been informed that Gabe is going to be released, and can see that he needs to take Gabe with him in order to save his life.

  • " He cuddled the small body close to him, and rubbed his little back." (Lowry, Page 210)  The only thing that is able to give Jonas the strength to continue to move forward is Gabe. With all of Jonas's strength, he transmitted a " Warm Memory" to Gabe in a attempt to save him.
  • Jonas is using the very last of his energy to save Gabriel though a "Warm Memory"
  • "He pressed his hands into his back and tried to remember sunshine. For a moment, it seemed that nothing came to him, that his power was completely gone." (Lowry, Page 221) Gabe and Jonas are almost completely frozen, but soon, Jonas experiences a warm sensation, and shows this goal in reaching Elsewhere.
  • We are almost there, Gabriel. I remember this place.
