  • IT isn't fair, it isn't right 
  • The morning of june 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of full summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green.
  • The lottery begins. Each of the 300 or so residents of the village draw a piece of paper from the black box. Bill Hutchinson,the head of his household, draws a paper with a black dot on it
  • There were stones on the ground and Delacroix selected a stone so large she had to pick it up with both hands. As Tessie Hutchinson protests, everyone even her own children and husband, descend upon her and stone her to death
