Thank you everybody for being here today. I'm here to answer any questions that the public needs to be informed of. Lets start with the first question.
What is this XYZ affair that we have been hearing about? Can you give us details?
Mhm. Recently, ambassadors were sent to France, and they were met by three Frenchmen who we have named "X," "Y," and "Z." They demanded that we pay these men, but I have refused to spend a single cent in bribes.
It is also because of this undeclared conflict that I have requested that Congress spend more on building up our Army and building a Navy. We are not at war, fellow citizens, but it is always good to be prepared, for any situation. Next question.
Since this affair, we have entered into a Quasi-War with France. No one has declared official conflict, but numerous American trading ships have been captured, and we have returned the favor by capturing several French ships.
Thomas Jefferson is saying that your Alien and Sedition Acts are politically motivated. Is that true? What exactly is the purpose of these acts, and why were they passed?
The only reason I would pass any Act is to protect this country and the people within. The Acts were passed to protect the country from any people who might mean harm to the government.
At this delicate time with France, any naysayers against the government could have serious consequences for both the French and this country.
Additionally, I have also learned of certain states choosing to ignore these acts. Under the Articles of Confederation, the idea of nullification was very legal, but illegal under the US Constitution.
These states' resolution to ignore laws that are passed is unconstitutional, the laws set by the constitution and the federal government override the powers of the states. That will be all, thank you.
