Scout and her family live in Maycomb Alabama, and despite being in the midst of the great depression her family does not struggle. Her father is a lawyer for the county. Racism and prejudice is still extremely common in society still.
Tom Robinson is accused of raping Mayella Ewell, and Atticus, Scout's father is chosen to defend hin. With this oredjuice is brought apon Scout's family and comes with many hardships they have to overcome.
Scout and her brother start to get a lot of attention, and not in a good way, because of the fact that their father was defending Tom Robinson. It brings upon many problems, through which starts to built their characters as they learn from the lessons brought from their tribulations.
Tom is found guilty in court, and both Scout and Jem are shocked at what people would do to an innocent man only based upon accusations and the color of his skin.
Bob Ewell after the trial makes it well known of his disgust of Atticus, Scout's father, having defended Tom in court. After the trial, he threatens both Atticus and Tom's wife, Helen. Scout and her brother fear of him possibly harming Atticus.
At the end of the story, Bob Ewell tries to attack and possibly murder Scout and her brother who were coming home after a Halloween recital, but Boo Radley steps in and protects the children.
