Ashoka used to want to expand his empire by force, and war. He was an Emperor and established strict laws....
Ashoka soon felt sorry for all he had done to all the countries that he fought and took over..
Ashoka had found a buddhist monk meditating in the streets.. amid the fighting and destruction..
peace!
Soon after that, Ashoka became a buddhist too, and began a reign of peace and nonviolence!
Ashoka began to spread Buddhism, and the thought of peace and nonviolence!
When Ashoka died.. his empire crumbled.. but without him, it's possible that buddhism wouldn't be practiced as much as it is today. There are about 400 million people studying buddhism, and without Ashoka, there may not have been that much!
