As soon as Annie met James, he told her that he had doubted her abilities to teach Helen anything. Annie ends up proving him wrong. James quotes, "You look like half a governess.", which shows he had no belief in Annie.
Annie's first time meeting Helen, she observes Helen is unkempt, messy, and curious. She approaches Helen slowly and harshly puts down her suitcase to show Helen that she has arrived. Helen sniffs and feels around on Annie and her luggage.
After a chaotic day, Helen sits by the pump, sure that she is alone. She spits the key out of her mouth and drops it into the water pump. This signifies Helen is something ready to be opened, by a key. Annie is the pump, which Helen drops the key into.
In this scene, Kate tells Annie about how she and Captain almost sent Helen to an asylum for the mentally ill. Annie explains how she spent half her life in an asylum and the trauma it brought. This gives us a little more of a backstory on Annie's childhood.
Annie had been trying to teach Helen what a word was all this time, but this time, Helen had made the connection. Helen broke out of her shell. Something had clicked Helen's mind, and she went around touching things to see what they were.
