Storyboard Text

  • Why did I pray? Strange question. Why did I live? Why did I breath?
  • This scene is important because it shows how important religion was to the Jews which is ironic because later on in the story, many Jewish people forget about their religion and focus more on survival.
  • "Why do you pray?"
  • "Man comes closer to God through the questions he asks Him. But we don't understand His replies. We cannot understand His replies."
  • This foreshadows what later on happens to the Jewish people. During the Holocaust, they pray to God and ask why this has happened to them and they do not understand His reply.
  • Moishe was not the same. the joy in his eyes was gone. He no longer sang. He no longer mentioned either God or Kabbalah. He only spoke of what he had seen.
  • The Holocaust put many people affected by it into distress and depression. Their experience changed the way they lived and that is represented by Moishe the Beadle and how he dealt with his experiences.
  • Families wouldn't be separated, we gave thanks to God.
  • During the early stages of the Holocaust, the Jews still had hope and they still believed that God had a plan for them and they gave thanks for all the little blessings they had during the Holocaust.
  • Weeks later during the Holocaust the Jewish people realized that there was no escape; they were angry at God because many believed that He had abandoned them.
  • Why should I sanctify His name? The Almighty the eternal and terrible Master of the universe chosen to be silent. What was there to thank Him for?
  • "Why, but why would I bless Him? Every fiber in me rebelled. He caused thousands of children to burn in mass graves."
  • Many people affected by the Holocaust had completely lost hope and they abandoned their religion. They stop saying Kaddish and praying for strength. Hope and faith was the only life the Jews had left.
