  • In 1789, France still clung to an outdated social system that had emerged in the Middle Ages. Under ancien regime, everyone in France was divided into estates. The First Estate was made up of the clergy; the Second Estate was made up of the nobility, and the Third Estate comprised the vast majority of the population.
  • Storming of the Bastille 
  • In 1788 Louis XIV finally summoned the Estate General
  • Revolution Begins
  • In June 1789, the people of France, declared themselves to be National Assembly. They found it's meeting hall locked and guarded, so they moved to an indoor tennis court. They took their Tennis Court Oath and swore "never to separate and to meet wherever the circumstances might require until we have established a sound and just constitution"
  • ON July 14, 1789, More than 800 Parisians assembled outside the Bastille. Many people were killed in battle  
  • Excitement, wonder, and fear engulfed France as the Revolution unfolded and spread
